Kenny Florian "honored" to fight "one of the best fighters on the planet" in Jose Aldo at UFC 136

Kenny Florian may only have one win in the featherweight division thus far, but his long tenure and level of success a division above was sufficient to put him in place for a title shot at 145 lbs., and he'll now meet Jose Aldo at UFC 136 this October.

Florian took to the newsletter for his personal website, KennyFlorian.com, to comment on his third shot at a UFC title, as well as his respect for a champion he feels is one of the best fighters in the sport.

"I am very honored to be fighting on this card against Jose Aldo for the UFC Featherweight Championship on October 8th in Houston, Texas,? Florian wrote. "I consider Jose Aldo one of the best fighters on the planet pound for pound. I have been a fan of Aldo since I first saw him fight live while I was doing commentary for the WEC. His explosiveness, well rounded game and experience make him the toughest challenge of my career."

That's a lofty comment from Florian, who has suffered high profile losses to tough fighters at lightweight in B.J. Penn, Sean Sherk and Gray Maynard. But Florian is relishing the challenge after successfully making his debut over a tough fighter in Aldo's teammate Diego Nunes at UFC 131.

"Fighting one of the top featherweights in the world in Diego Nunes at featherweight this past June showed me how tough this weight class truly is," Florian admitted. "I have always been about taking chances and challenges throughout my career, whether it was going up in weight and fighting at 185 [lbs.] and 170 [lbs.] or fighting at 155 [lbs.] and 145 [lbs.]"

"Jose Aldo poses a threat everywhere and I will have to prepare a perfect training camp for him."

Penick's Analysis: Whether he legitimately sees Aldo as a bigger challenge than Maynard, Penn or Sherk were, he needs to have that in his mind as motivation and understanding of what he's up against. Aldo's been seen as a special talent since he burst into prominence in the WEC, and Florian represents probably the most well-known fighter Aldo has ever faced. Because of that, Florian also makes for a very big fight for Aldo, and each should have plenty of motivation to have a hell of a title fight in the co-main event on this card. It's going to be a fantastic fight, and Florian knows he has his work cut out for him if he's going to capture a title in the UFC for the first time.

Maynard Says Adrenaline Dump Effected Him Vs. Edgar, Lessons Learned

By howie@mmanews.com">Chris Howie
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer

After fighting back and forth for 25 minutes to kick the year off at UFC 125 on January 1st, Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard were left without a winner, instead, their title fight being declared a draw by the judges.

The two will meet again this October at UFC 136 in Houston, TX and Maynard, who walked away from the fight without UFC gold, talked to Cleveland.com about the lessons learned and what he DID walk away with following the draw:

"It wasn't that I got tired. I had that adrenaline dump. All your hopes and goals and everything you could ever hope for, that you trained for, is right there. It's happening, you know? And you see it. And then it doesn't. Melvin Guillard gets what he asked for - Joe Lauzon bout at UFC 136 in Houston

October's UFC 136 card is an absolutely stacked MMA event on pay-per-view, and another lightweight fight confirmed for the card attests to that fact.

The UFC announced on Friday that the card, co-headlined by a Lightweight Championship bout between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard and a Featherweight Championship bout in Jose Aldo vs. Kenny Florian, will also feature a lightweight matchup between Joe Lauzon and Melvin Guillard.

Guillard said in an interview following his UFC 132 knockout win over Shane Roller that Lauzon was a fighter he was interested in facing, and Lauzon was quick to express his willingness to take the fight as well. Now the UFC has made the fight, and the two will square off on the card.

Lauzon commented on the matchup in a blog post on his personal website, JoeLauzon.com.

"You can?t build a reputation on what you?re going to do. You have to go out and do it," Lauzon wrote. "Melvin Guillard said in a interview he was going to ask the UFC to fight me. I think the media blew it out of proportion a little bit and really ran with it saying he challenged me. I posted a blog saying if thats what the UFC wanted, then lets do it. I have always said, I will fight whoever they want. They are the bosses and they tell me who to fight."

"Yesterday, I got a call from Joe Silva saying that Melvin and I were making his job easy and that if I wanted the fight, he thought it would be exciting. I told him again, anything he wants. While no contracts have been signed, verbal agreements have been made."

Lauzon is coming off a "Submission of the Night" winning performance over Curt Warburton at UFC on Versus 4, where he nearly took the Brit's arm off with a vicious first round kimura. With Lauzon's submission game and Guillard's striking prowess, Lauzon expects someone to get finished in this fight.

"One way or another, someone is getting hurt," he wrote. "Pretty much all of his losses in the UFC are to submissions and thats where I really shine. While I?m sure he will be looking for the knockout bonus? I will be looking for the submission bonus. This fight is guaranteed excitement."

The event airs live on pay-per-view on October 8 from the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

Penick's Analysis: This is a very good lightweight fight, and both fighters are entering off of impressive and decisive wins. Guillard continues to tread water with fights all on the same level as he waits for the top end to clear up a bit, but if he can pick up another impressive win in a row he can keep himself in line in the packed top end. For Lauzon, if he can halt Guillard's momentum he'll notch the biggest win he's had since his upset win over Jens Pulver in his UFC debut.

Terri Runnels Irate At New Jack ? Vicious Claims

New Jack and Terri Runnels recently called it quits on their near two-year relationship. The break-up has since turned nasty as the former ECW star alleged to numerous colleagues that Runnels contracted and spread a sexually transmitted disease throughout the wrestling industry. The former WWE Diva is speaking out against his vicious allegations, which she adamantly says are lies. She wrote on her Facebook account: “I said I wouldn’t lower myself to that of others…however one of two things are about to happen! Either a retraction of lies and defamation of ...
